WINGS is the only global network of philanthropy support and dev
In line with our strategic priorities outlined in the WINGS 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, and
especially Strategic Priority 1 (Nurturing network(s) and strengthening ecosystems), as well as
the aligned strategy for our work in Africa, the Africa Coordinator will help WINGS nurture our
vibrant and growing network in the region. The Coordinator will ensure proximity to the
members in the region and support them in engaging in WINGS’ activities. In partnership with
members, this role will also raise the profile of philanthropy and practitioners from Africa
globally, strengthen understanding of philanthropy support ecosystems, trends, needs, and
challenges, and promote greater exchanges across the region and across the global
philanthropic landscape.
The role of the Africa Coordinator encompasses three key objectives:
1. Network growth and engagement: This role is one of the primary points of contact for
WINGS members in the region. In managing the regional portfolio, the Contractor will:
● Work closely with other WINGS colleagues to support efforts on topics related to the
enabling environment of philanthropy, policy advocacy, climate, locally-led
development, SDGs, philanthropy’s transformation, knowledge management, and
multi-stakeholder partnerships, among others.
● Create space for regional conversations, including crucially through the Africa Working
Group. This group serves as a community of learning and practice for WINGS members
committed to strengthening the landscape of philanthropy in the region. The
coordination activities include designing and executing online and in-person events,
identifying and fostering members’ collaboration, and developing strategies for
innovation and engagement
2. Strengthening philanthropy support ecosystems: WINGS works to strengthen the
philanthropic field where it is most needed. This is done in collaboration with members and
partners and using collective knowledge, experience, and frameworks. The objective is to
create stronger local ecosystems to foster giving and solidarity, by ensuring philanthropic
actors are supported, connected and empowered. In close partnerships and complementarity
with Pan-African, sub-regional and national members, the Contractor will pursue efforts to
strengthen, connect and support local, subregional and regional philanthropy infrastructure
through:
● Planning and coordinating the implementation of philanthropy support ecosystem
strengthening (regional, national, and/or thematic).
● Identifying specific capacity-building needs in the sector and ways to increase
collaboration and sustainability.
● Co-convening players and leveraging WINGS’ position as a global network.
3. Contributing to advancing the overall mission of WINGS in the region: support WINGS in
its overarching work around capacity building, knowledge production for philanthropy networks
and support organisations, communications and resource acquisition as necessary.
